About The Department

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering is one of six departments within the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. It offers an EAC/ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and a Master of Science degree. Its mission is primarily threefold:

  • To instill a sense of scholarship and leadership in the civil engineering profession.
  • To educate and prepare students for lifelong careers as practicing professional civil engineers who are ethical and socially responsible.
  • To produce graduates with a strong academic base for advanced studies.

Enrollments in the department consist of approximately 160 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. The department consists of eight faculty members with expertise covering a broad spectrum of civil and architectural engineering. The emphasis in the undergraduate curriculum is placed on the following five areas:

  • Structural Engineering deals with the study, planning, designing, and analyzing infrastructure systems such as: bridges, high-rise buildings, power plants, etc. Involvement in these projects gives civil engineers the opportunity to become well known as designers, builders and developers for improving the society's quality of life.
  • Transportation Engineering includes planning, designing and constructing highways and related facilities. Other works include selecting and improving materials for pavement construction as well as working with positional surveying and improving traffic controls.
  • Geotechnical Engineering forms basic concepts for determining the properties of soil in earthwork constructions including the design and construction of foundations, dams, and pavement structures for highways.
  • Environmental Engineering becomes increasingly important as the population grows since environmental engineers are responsible for water supply, wastewater treatment, and waste disposal. Environmental engineers are called upon to help preserve and protect the natural resources for the benefit of mankind.
  • Architectural Engineering.

Additional civil engineering electives can be chosen from the following areas:

1). Construction Engineering

2). Traffic and Highway Engineering

3). Foundation Engineering

4). Water Resources Engineering
